The royal family hosts an elaborate ceremony to mark the change of the palace guards. Known as guard mounting, the event takes place at 11 am on a specified date, and is open for crowds to witness.

Like all major royal family traditions, these ceremonies also feature live music played by renowned bands.

One such ceremony was held last Friday, and among other popular songs, the band thrilled the audience by playing an unexpected ABBA track.

According to a recent video footage shared on the royal family’s official account, the crowd witnessing the change of guards was thrilled to recognize the song as Dancing Queen, one of ABBA’s evergreen numbers.

Playing the instrumental version of the song seemed to be an indirect nod to the Queen of England.

The song was performed by the Band of the Royal Logistic Corps, which is a part of the Corps of Army Music, a selected list of 22 bands that perform and promote military music.

The timing of choosing to play the ABBA song is also significant, as the band performed it just over a week after the sequel to the classic film Mamma Mia! was released.

The new film, titled Mamma Mia! – Here We Go Again was out in theatres on July 18, 10 years after the release of the original film, which was in itself inspired by a music based on ABBA’s music.

In Buckingham Palace, bands playing at the guard mounting event have been known for playing American tracks from time to time. For instance, the theme music of the HBO series Game of Thrones was also performed in the recent past.

The 45-minute event was a grand affair, with members of the royal family watching as the well-groomed band of musicians stood in formation and gave the ceremony an added touch of grandeur.
