Keanu Reeves Isn’t Shy about Wearing Worn-Out Shoes: He Helps the Needy as ‘Money Is the Last Thing’ He Thinks About

Keanu Reeves, a Canadian actor, has worn the same simple look for the last 25 years or more. The movie star was born in Beirut on September 2, 1964, and raised in Toronto. He has made millions in his lifetime, and would rather give it away than spend it on a lavish lifestyle.

Reeves is mega-successful by most standards. He has starred in blockbuster films like "Speed," "The Matrix" trilogy, and "John Wick." Despite his notoriety, he is one of the most humble people in Hollywood.

He can connect with the wealthy or homeless on a basic, human level making it hard to find someone who hates him. The "Point Break" actor is known for his generosity. Not only does he take a genuine interest in people, he is known to give large amounts of his money away.

Friends say that the actor is willing to give to those in need partly because he is embarrassed by how much money he has made during his career. Having signed a profit percentage deal for one of his most significant projects, "The Matrix," Reeves has made over $300 million.

Nevertheless, he has been quoted saying that money is meaningless. One casting director said of the actor, "The reason Keanu's starred in 60 movies is that, on top of audiences, directors love him, co-stars love him, crews love him. He's always prepared; he's always on time. Considerate, communicative, caring — there's no one whose name he doesn't know or hasn't had a conversation with."

He is not motivated by amassing wealth and power but prefers to live a simple life and is thankful for good health. Perhaps this explains why cancer research is one of his pet causes.

Inspired by his sister Kim's fight against leukemia, he reportedly donated $31.5 million of his salary towards cancer research. During the pandemic, Keanu Reeves auctioned off a Zoom date to raise money for Camp Rainbow Gold, a children's cancer charity.

An anonymous bidder paid $75,200 for the virtual meeting with the "Speed" leading man. In September 2020, he admitted to funding an organization that has helped make valuable efforts in cancer research and provides funding to children's hospitals in the United States.

Despite earning millions, Reeves has been known to wear a variation of the same look for the past 25 years or more. This aesthetic matches any situation, from the red carpet to interviews.

The actor prefers darker colors with a fitted silhouette but not figure hugging. He has been quoted as saying, "Money doesn't mean anything to me. I've made a lot of money, but I want to enjoy life and not stress myself building my bank account."

He has also said, "Money is the last thing I think about. I could live on what I've already made for the next few centuries." And his shoes always tell a story, as they are simple and forgettable. The star has been known to grace many an occasion wearing a well-worn pair of boots, the perfect counterpoint to a suit, dark jeans, and a biker jacket.

This aspect of his style is signature Reeves, exceptional yet approachable. Because of his inclination to keep a low profile, buying expensive accessories and posting pictures on social media is not his style.

Instead, he invests in people who make his work easier. He is known for buying gifts for the often-forgotten crew members who work on his movies.

Speaking about what it's like to work with Reeves, a Hollywood source said, "Trust me, stunt guys are all dying to work with Keanu, not just for the gifts. It’s because he takes them so seriously and credits them with helping contribute to his success. Stuntmen, fight trainers — these people rarely get that."

The leading man reportedly gave a $20,000 bonus to a set-builder on a "Matrix" film. He has been known to provide lavish, personalized gifts to crew members who work closely with him. These gifts include Rolex watches and Harley Davidsons for his stunt team members. If he believes in a project, he will take less pay so that other cast members can receive more.

That's just the kind of guy he is. He can meet a homeless man and decide to hang out with him. Photographers once came upon him by surprise and saw him sharing snacks and listening to his new friend in the 1990s. He has also been photographed giving money to un-housed people.

A Vanity Fair profile labeled him homeless in August 1995. But as someone living between hotels, he was in a better space than most people who bear this label.

In addition to Reeves's generosity, there is evidence of him being an old-school gentleman. A YouTube clip uploaded in August 2011 shows him giving up his seat on the subway for a woman.

Reeves has endured hardship, which leads him to value people more. His father abandoned the family when he was young, and his mother, Patricia Taylor, single-handedly raised Reeves and his two sisters, Karina and Kim.

The actor's family had to endure tough times to get by, but his mother did the best for her children. Now, Reeves, who knows how it is to be on the other side of life, uses his wealth to support and alleviate the suffering of others.

Zach Galifianakis Paid Old Homeless Woman's Rent for Years and Spent Time with Her as She Had No Family

Zach Galifianakis has become a household name and one of the most beloved comedians in Hollywood. However, he had a much humbler beginning and lived a very different life from his current one. Through it all, one woman has been a constant in his world.

Galifianakis moved to Los Angeles when he was beginning his comedy career. He had plans to be a star, but as with all other stars, he had to start small and work his way up to his big break. The comedian did this by working odd jobs and doing stand-up gigs.

These small gigs allowed him to show off his talent before landing significant roles like Alan, in the "The Hangover" franchise. As he met with Hollywood directors, Galifianakis also made important friends.

While his gigs were life-changing, the woman who kept him company during those years was someone he met in the most unlikely place. It turned out that the pair would become a formidable team in years to come.

It all started in 1994 when Galifianakis met a woman who would significantly impact his life. When they met, Marie "Mimi" Haist was volunteering in a laundromat, surviving off tips left by customers.

The star frequented Fox Laundry where Haist was volunteering because he lived nearby. While their first meeting was over 20 years ago, the pair maintained a strong bond.

Although Haist was married earlier in her life, when she met Galifianakis, she had been alone for some time. After she got divorced, she lived on the streets and began looking for a place to work or sleep. She found both of those things in one place.

Haist began working at the laundromat, where her boss allowed her to live for almost 20 years. Haist revealed that she would sleep between the washing and drying machines so customers couldn't see her.

After Haist and Galifianakis became friends, he discovered she lived at the laundromat. He then told her he would find her a place to live comfortably and kept his promise.

Later, Galifianakis introduced Haist to Reneé Zellwegger, who helped furnish Haist's apartment. While Haist was unaware of who Galifianakis was, she immediately recognized Zellwegger and was excited to meet her.

While Galifianakis has impacted Haist's life, she had somebody else to thank as well. She is grateful to Zellwegger and Galifianakis for all they have done. Haist said, "I really appreciate Zach and Renée for [everything they've done], I have a place to live now and my own bed. I now get my social security, so it helps me pay [for food] and my phone bill."

When Galifianakis got his breakthrough role in "The Hangover" in 2009, he and Haist had built a strong bond. This bond brought new opportunities for Haist to experience the finer things in life.

Whenever Galifianakis didn't have anyone to take to his Hollywood events, he would ask Haist to be his date. Even though he has been in the public eye for a long time, he is not used to these events but says Haist handles them well.

Galifianakis said he enjoyed taking Haist on the red carpet, sharing, "I like to see her in that atmosphere. Somehow she fits in in a very strange way."

Haist explained her thoughts on the red carpet treatment she has experienced since meeting Galifianakis, noting, "If he's in town, he takes me ... I dress up nice, and a friend helps me with my makeup. It's fun, not something I've ever dreamed I'd experience. The limo takes me home afterward."

While it is fun for Haist to be at these events, she is not the only one happy to be there. Zach Galifianakis said that although he doesn't enjoy red carpets, Haist makes it better, as he feels better when she is with him on the red carpet.

Being in the glow of Galifianakis' spotlight cast some of the glow onto Haist. In 2016, a documentary was made about Haist called "Queen Mimi." Yaniv Rokah, the director, said he was intrigued by Haist's story and wanted to make a movie about it.

He spoke about meeting Haist and deciding to find out what her life was about. Rokah revealed, "I wanted to know who is she, why is she there, what is the story?"

Once the film premiered, Haist became recognizable to the customers in the laundromat, who told her she was a star. However, Haist did her business as usual, with only a few breaks from the ordinary when she was on the red carpet.

Even after becoming a well-known name in and around Hollywood, she still cleaned the dryers at the laundromat because she believed that nobody else could do the job as well as she could.

Despite having a difficult life, Haist never considered herself to be homeless. She said she never allowed herself to become mixed up with the wrong crowd and didn't allow herself to become depressed about anything.

Haist revealed that when her friends came to see her, they would tell her she was famous. Although she did not think this was the case and was living her life. Unfortunately, Haist passed away in late 2021, but her memory lives on in her documentary.

He said he liked being on buses because it was an immensely grounding experience for him, adding, "There’s something about that, being ordinary ... I mean, I know I can’t be ordinary, at all – I’m way too famous to be ordinary – but, for me, that feeling inside, of feeling like myself still, is very important."

He recalled drawing some attention during a bus ride from Long Island to New York. McCartney remembered that one black woman asked him, "'Are you Paul McCartney?' And I said, 'Yes, I am.' And she said, 'What are you doing on this bus?' And I said, 'Why don’t you stop shouting and come and sit next to me?'”

The singer asked the woman to sit next to him, so as not to draw the attention of everyone on the bus to him. The woman inquired about Paul McCartney's destination, revealing her plan to visit her sister uptown, sparking a delightful conversation between them.

This preference for genuine, unassuming interactions holds significant value for the singer. He cherishes the simplicity of such talks. For instance, he noted he couldn't bear the thought of boarding a bus and drawing attention to himself. Such an act is beyond his desires and capability.

The musician explained his unusual approach, "We ended up having this lovely conversation. That’s why I like a proper conversation. Being ordinary. I love that. It means a lot to me – maybe too much to me. I wouldn’t have wanted to get on the bus and sort of announce myself."

The singer, who the late Queen Elizabeth knighted in 1997 isn't like other celebrities. He doesn't travel with an entourage or use bodyguards for protection. Clad in an ordinary outfit, he minded his business while on a train in London.

McCartney once boarded the rail transportation at Kings Cross station. If his presence wasn't enough to stun fellow passengers, his subsequent actions were. He pulled out an old-fashioned Nokia phone and checked his messages before reading the newspaper like any other man on the train.

The former Beatles band member amazes people. He would ride in the second-class train carriage, unbothered by his wealth and ability to buy the entire train. Passengers were in awe of his choices, and much of the online community praised him for his modesty.

People loved how McCartney "kept it real" and lived like everyone else. If fans of the pop icon needed another reason to adore the living legend, they have one.

Ollie Wong, one of the commuters who saw McCartney on the train, detailed the experience. Wong stated, "I looked at him, and I instantly thought, 'That's Paul McCartney!' I couldn't believe he was slumming it in my second class."

Aside from his career, the actor supports veterans through his charitable work. In 2022, the Gary Sinise Foundation gave a deserving local Army veteran and his family the keys to a new home, free from the burden of a mortgage.

His foundation is dedicated to providing real-life support to wounded warriors and their families by constructing homes for them.

The recipient of his charity, Former Army Chief Warrant Officer Romy Camargo, along with his wife Gaby and their two children, experienced a heartwarming moment as they were handed the keys to their new home in Lutz.

The house was specifically designed and equipped with technology to enhance Camargo's independence. He was grateful for the spaciousness of the house, and the freedom it would provide him to move around without worrying about causing damage.

Carmago emphasized the fulfillment of his dream. He wanted a home where he could navigate freely and mentioned the ability to perform 360-degree turns in almost every area of the house. "Oh my God, beyond expectations, honestly. They did an amazing job. We’re so grateful that I don’t think saying thank you is enough,” gushed Carmago.

The spacious house is filled with top-of-the-line appliances and luxurious materials. It had a stunning view of the lakefront and advanced smart technology. The house gave Carmago the independence he strived to offer others with similar challenges.

Over 14 years ago, Camargo was paralyzed after sustaining a gunshot wound to the spine during a humanitarian mission. The Gary Sinise Foundation chose to build a home to honor his sacrifices in combat and recognize his continued service in supporting other wounded warriors.

Alongside his wife, Camargo runs the Stay in Step Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center in Tampa. In a touching gesture, Sinise presented the Camargos with a $25,000 donation for their organization. Carmago commended the foundation, "This is a testament to what they do and how they do it. And to make — you know, our reality — to make it our reality.”

Carmago's house was the 79th home the Gary Sinise Foundation had built. The high number is a testament to their ongoing commitment. Each year, they welcome around eight to ten wounded warriors and first responders into their program, providing them with support and assistance.
